Japan Medical Information

Japan hospitals

Japan has a high standard of medical care provided in its hospitals.

Medical costs are high in Japan and visitors are recommended to take out travel health insurance. Residents are encouraged by the Japanese government to become part of the national health insurance scheme, though many foreign residents prefer to take out their own private insurance. Full-time employees of Japanese companies or universities will be enrolled into the national insurance scheme with deductions taken monthly from their salaries.

Japan's tourist offices should have a list of English speaking doctors and dentists in the area they cover and many English-language magazines also advertise the services of English-speaking health practitioners. International hotels may have doctors on call.

In case of emergency call an ambulance (Tel: 119), though ambulance staff are not trained paramedics in Japan.

For minor ailments consult a high street pharmacy.

Hospitals 病院

As a rule of thumb, health services are better in the big cities than rural areas. University-affiliated hospitals, training hospitals, prefectural hospitals and Red Cross hospitals are considered among the best hospitals in Japan.

A number of hospitals in Japan are included on the following list of government-supported medical institutions recommended for foreigners: www.japanhospitalsearch.org

The hospitals on the list are recommended for patients from around the world seeking advanced medical care in Japan.
